Effectively Engage with Stakeholders – Project Management Principle 3

Project Management Principle 3 states,

Engage stakeholders proactively and to the degree needed to contribute to project success and customer satisfaction.

A stakeholder is someone who may affect, be affected by or perceive themselves to be affected by the project. Stakeholders can be individuals, groups, organizations, governments or even countries. They can directly or indirectly influence the project (or its performance or outcome) in a positive or negative way.

The most important keyword of this principle is ‘Engagement’. Project teams serve stakeholders by engaging with them and thus proactively ensuring value delivery. Not engaging with stakeholders may result in missed opportunities and creating threats.

Stakeholders can affect multiple aspects of a project. Some of these are listed below,

Stakeholders, with their changing dynamics, require proactive and effective engagement. Project teams, as stakeholders themselves, must continuously identify, analyze, and engage with others. The key is understanding communication preferences and fostering relationships through two-way communication and collaboration.

Interpersonal skills such as initiative, integrity, collaboration, respect, empathy, and confidence are crucial. Stakeholder engagement is an ongoing process that enables tailored responses to changing circumstances, minimizing negative impacts, and maximizing positive outcomes.

Sustained engagement throughout the project helps discover solutions acceptable to a broader range of stakeholders, contributing significantly to project success.
