The Five Scrum Values – Openness, Respect, Courage, Focus and Commitment

While we have already talked about the agile manifesto values, principles and the overall importance of agile mindset, scrum comes with its own set of five values. These values are as important for scrum teams as agile values are for an agile environment.

1. Openness

“The Scrum team and its stakeholders agree to be open about all the work and the challenges with performing the work.” – The Scrum Guide.

You always know what your team members are working on. Your team members are comfortable with you having this information. If there is an issue you can openly discuss with the team.

2. Respect

“Scrum team members respect each other to be capable, independent people.” – The Scrum Guide.youtube.com

You and your team members have mutual respect for each other. Every team member trusts the teammates to do their jobs.

3. Courage

“The Scrum team members have courage to do the right thing and work on tough problems.” – The Scrum Guide.

Scrum teams have the courage to take on the challenges collectively. Not just that, individual people on the team have the courage to stand up for their project too.

4. Focus

“Everyone focuses on the work of the Sprint and the goals of the Scrum team.” (The Scrum Guide)

Every team member is focused on the sprint goal (This is the reason the team comes up with a sprint goal to begin with). During the course of a sprint, everyone in the team works only on the sprint tasks and completes one task at a time.

5. Commitment

“People personally commit to achieving the goals of the Scrum team.” – The Scrum Guide

All the team members are working towards and committed to delivering the most valuable product that they can. Rest of the company is committed too.
