In our discussion on the Schedule Management knowledge area, we have already talked about Define Activities Process. We have also discussed important concepts linked with it like Rolling Wave Planning and Progressive Elaboration. In this article, we are looking into the outputs of the Define Activities process specifically because they are also important individual topics from PMP exam perspective.
Below are the three outputs of the Define Activities process,
Activity List is basically a list of everything that needs to be done to complete the project. This is one level below the Work Packages in your standard WBS which means each Work Package will have a list of activities to be accomplished
Activity Attributes is to Activity list what WBS Dictionary is to the WBS. Each activity is defined in detail in the corresponding Activity Attribute entry. Resources or time requirements for an activity as well as scheduling information like successor or predecessor activities and constraints should all be listed in the Activity Attributes
Milestones are nothing but important checkpoints in your project. They could also be linked to payment terms in the project. Important thing to note here is that a milestone is a 0-day activity which means it is only a point in time in the project. A milestone by itself doesn’t occupy any time period
