An introduction to Sprint in Agile and Scrum

sprinter running sprint in agile and scrum

As we have already seen in the previous article on Scrum, a Sprint is basically a short race run at full speed.

From software development perspective, this race lasts for 30 days. Some of the pointers to note about sprint are,

  • Sprints are limited to one calendar month
  • During the Sprint:
    • No changes are made that would endanger the Sprint Goal
    • Quality goals do not decrease
    • Scope may be clarified and re-negotiated between the Product Owner and Development Team as more is learned
  • A new Sprint starts immediately after the conclusion of the previous Sprint

Why can’t the Sprint last longer than a month?

Typically, the Sprint is one month long. The reason for that is because if a Sprint’s horizon is too long the definition of what is being built may change. This will increase the complexity and risk. The whole idea of Sprints is to enable predictability by ensuring inspection and adaptation of progress toward a Sprint Goal at least every calendar month
