There is one question that we usually come across when it comes to the PMP Certification – Can I obtain the PMP Certification from my office or university or college or some random Project Management Training Institute.
The small answer to this is – No You Cannot!
There is only one body that provides the PMP credential and that is the Project Management Institute (PMI). PMI is a non-profit professional organization with the key focus on Project Management. It was founded in 1969 and is located in Newtown Square, Pennsynlvania, United States. The 3 out of 5 founders of PMI mentioned on the official website are James Snyder, Eric Jenett and Gordon Davis. We have covered the entire story of how PMI was founded in this video – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=urTF4ZONYKc
Although PMI was founded in 1969, it should be noted that PMP was launched in 1984. As of March 2018, there were 833,025 active PMP certification holders.
Now that we have the basics out of the way, its worth noting that when somebody asks the question about getting PMP certification from anywhere else except PMI, they might be referring to the 35 contact hours of Project Management education or PDUs. This is one of the many prerequisites for the PMP exam. Here’s a video where we have already covered all the prerequisites for PMP – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9SENm7qL6us
Another question related to this topic is whether or not the 35 hours of project management education is enough? Or one must clear the exam and obtain the PMP credentials as well. As a Project Manager, your aim should be to obtain the PMP certification and not just the contact hours or PDUs. This was also previously covered in this video – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7NG1OpERAHA
