Integration Management – The Basics

If you don’t already know, the key role of the Project Manager is to perform integration. Bring everything together.

Project Integration Management involves consolidating actions that are crucial for successfully completing the project. Note that Integration Management is high-level work and involves managing the dependencies among all other knowledge areas.

Let’s take a look at the processes of the Integration Management Knowledge Area,

Develop Project Charter

Project Charter is a document that formally authorizes the existence of a project and provides the project manager with the authority to apply organizational resources to the project activities

Develop Project Management Plan

As opposed to the Project Charter process, you don’t really create the entire plan in this process. Infact you will only integrate all the subsidiary plans into a comprehensive Project Management Plan

Direct and Manage Project Work

This is the process of leading and performing the work defined in the Project Management Plan to achieve the project objectives

Manage Project Knowledge

This is a new process introduced in the PMBOK 6. This is where you use the existing knowledge (through previous projects and experience) as well as create new knowledge as part of your current project and on the whole contributing to organizational learning

Monitor and Control Project Work

One of the most important tasks of the Project Manager is to track, review and regulate the project’s progress to meet the performance objectives defined in the Project Management Plan. This process is where all of it is done

Perform Integrated Change Control

This is the process of reviewing all the CRs, approving and managing changes to the Project Management Plan, the project deliverables, OPAs and all other project documents

Close Project or Phase

This is where the Project Manager finalizes all the activities across all the project management process groups to formally complete the project or the phase
